We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, classmates, and community of Payson Groff of Kankakee, Illinois, whose passing at the age of 15 is an unimaginable and heartbreaking loss. During this time of profound grief, those who knew her continue to reflect on the bright, vibrant, and meaningful life she lived, however brief, and the lasting impact she left behind.
Payson Groff was born on March 8, 2011, in Kankakee, Illinois, and was a student at Herscher High School. From a young age, she demonstrated an exceptional sense of purpose, curiosity, and determination that set her apart. She was known for her intelligence, her drive, and her ability to dream boldly about her future. Among those dreams was her aspiration to attend Northwestern University and pursue a career as a lawyer—an ambition that reflected not only her academic potential but also her desire to stand for justice and make a positive difference in the world.
Beyond her goals, Payson embraced life with creativity, energy, and warmth. She was a loving older sister who took pride in her role within her large and close-knit family. Her personality was a blend of humor, imagination, and compassion, making her deeply cherished by those around her. She enjoyed a wide range of interests, including art, drawing, softball, and track, and she also found joy in everyday hobbies such as playing Fortnite and collecting Monster High dolls.
Payson’s creativity extended into digital expression as well. She and her best friend Natalie created a TikTok cooking series titled “Cooking with Good Looking,” which showcased her playful spirit, confidence, and ability to bring joy to others through simple, shared moments. These memories now stand as treasured reminders of her lighthearted nature and creativity.
She is survived by her parents, siblings, grandparents, extended family, and many friends who loved her dearly. She was preceded in death by her great-grandmother, Judy Arnold. As visitation and services are planned at Clancy-Gernon Funeral Home and Faith Baptist Church, the community gathers in sorrow and remembrance.
Though her time on earth was far too short, Payson Groff’s dreams, kindness, and vibrant spirit will continue to live on in all who knew and loved her.
